Medical services
POPUP’s medical services include POPMed, POPDent and POPEye. Our vision for the medical services is to empower people to live healthy lives.
This is achieved through:
- the delivery of effective, safe and accessible primary health care through the medical, dental and eye care services
- the promotion of the general health of patients, learners and staff through health education and screening projects, and
- empowering people to save lives through health screening, first aid training and pregnancy screening.
Beneficiaries of these services include:
- People with no income and medial aid.
- People who earn a minimum wage or salary with no medical aid, and have a household income of less than R3 000 per month. If an income above R3 000 per month is earned, a sliding scale is applicable.
- Residents of old age homes and shelters, pensioners, children.
- Children who attend POPKids and POPUP learners.
- Volunteers and personnel at POPUP and Doxa Deo, referred and approved by Management.
- Family of volunteers and personnel.
POPMed
POPMed is a free medical clinic situated at POPUP. It is run by a full time nurse. A volunteer medical doctor assists in the clinic one day a week.
Our vision is to improve the lives of people and to empower them to live healthy lives.
POPMed provides basic community health care services. Issues like healthy eating, social behaviour, planning for the future, chronic illnesses and cultural beliefs are addressed Biblically. Patients who require more advanced treatment are referred to government facilities.
The range of services now also includes physiotherapy on Tuesdays.
Services are rendered to the underprivileged community in the area and the learners who attend training programmes at POPUP. POPMed helps between 200 and 300 people per month.
POPEye
POPEye offers an eye care service that includes eye testing and supplying frames and glasses at reasonable costs to those in need.
POPDent
POPDent is a free, fully equipped community dentistry clinic. Final year dentistry students from Medunsa, under the guidance of their lecturer and a dental assistant provide the POPDent services. The services include extraction of teeth, fillings, scaling and polishing and general dental health promotion. |
