Prospective learners can enroll at POPUP subject to the following qualifications:
- Between 18 and 45 years of age.
- Unemployed - available daily for full-time studies.
- No post-school qualifications – grade 12 not necessary.
- Read, write, speak and understand English – successful completion of a written test in this regard is compulsory.
An enrolment fee of only R50.00 is payable per skills programme. No add-itional payment is required and learners also receive a fully balanced, cook-ed meal free of charge on a daily basis during their time of study. All applicants are required to attend a 10-day Life Skills Training Programme (free of charge) before the starting their skills programme.
Hospitality Services
Home Management is a 6 week Skills Programme (plus a two week practical training period – outside POPUP). This skills programme includes three modules, i.e. Kitchen, Cleaning and Laundry Skills. A module on safety measures is now also included in the programme.
Learners who successfully complete this programme will be qualified to work:
- as home managers/butlers in private homes, guest houses, bed and-breakfast facilities and/or hotels,
- hospitals, old-age homes and/or similar institutions, as well as
- for organisations offering cleaning services.
Cooking
The Catering skills programme is covered in 9 weeks. The learners are trained in the basics of cookery as well as the hygiene theory and practice that are part and parcel of the cooking process.
The modules in this course include different cooking methods (frying, grilling and baking); the preparation of various food dishes (vegetables and sandwiches); the cleaning work areas as well as kitchen and personal hygiene, and the correct procedures of food storage.
Learners who successfully complete this programme will be qualified to work in the following areas:
- Hotels
- Restaurants
- Hospitals
- Prisons
- Catering Companies
- Starting his/her own business
Garment and Décor Manufacturing
The Garment and Décor Design skills programme includes 3 modules namely, Garment Manufacturing; Menswear and Curtain Making and Décor.
During the first module each learner makes a lined pencil skirt, a pair of ladies’ pants and a blouse. In the second module the learners make men’s shirt and trousers. In the last 20 days of the programme, the learners make curtains, blinds, duvet sets and cushions. The entire programme runs over 8 weeks.
Learners who successfully complete this skills programme are qualified to apply for employment in any of the following areas:
- Seamstress
- Dress designing
- Interior designing
- Entrepreneur
Home-based Care
The Home-based Care Skills Programme extends over a period of 16 weeks and includes practical training which is done at a nursing/care institution in Centurion. During the training of Home-base Care learners the following modules are covered:
- The ability to assess a client’s situation and assist and support both client and family to manage home based health care.
- Demonstrate the knowledge of the provision and implementation of primary health care.
- Perform basic life support and first aid procedures.
- Demonstrate an understanding of sexuality and sexually transmitted infections (including HIV/Aids).
Learners who have successfully completed this skills programme can seek employment in any of the following areas:
- Private home taking care of elderly/sick individual/s.
- Old age homes/retirement village clinics.
- Nursing homes/clinics.
Computers/Office Administration
The Computer and Secretarial Skills Programme extends over a period of 11 weeks. During this training the following modules are covered:
- A general introduction to MS Word, Excell and Powerpoint.
- Secretarial/Personal Assistant training.
- Call Centre Training.
Learners who have successfully completed this skills programme can seek employment in any of the following areas:
- Personal Assistant/Secretary.
- Administrative/clerical/office duties.
- Receptionist/switchboard operator/telephonist.
- Call Centre work.
- Data capturing/typist.
Arts and Crafts
The duration of the Arts and Crafts Skills Programme depends on the nature of the craft being taught and usually lasts for four to six weeks. Learners are taught the art of making marketable craft products and how to review and complete their products for the market.
On completion of their specific skills programme learners should be able to apply their knowledge to manufacture articles/products/goods within their field of expertise.
In addition to working in companies/organisations in the arts and crafts fields a learner will also be encouraged to start his/her own entrepreneurial venture (learners are encouraged to also attend the Business Skills Programme, as mentioned above after the completion of the Arts and Crafts Skills Programme.)
Business Skills
The duration of the Business Skills Management Skills Programme is ten days and is presented by lecturers from the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT). The programme focuses on the following:
- Introduction to entrepreneurship and small business.
- The environment for entrepreneurship.
- The entrepreneur.
- The entrepreneurial process.
- The business plan.
- Entering the business world.
- Marketing.
- Operations management.
- Human resources management.
- Financial management.
- Family business.
- E-commerce.
- Networks and strategic alliances.
Life Skills
A 10 day Life Skills programme is presented and was developed to bring restoration to individuals on a holistic level and equip them with skills needed to live to their full potential.
The programme covers a variety of topics such as: The purpose of life, Who is God?, Who am I?, communication, conflict, time management, emotional healing and forgiveness, HIV and Aids training, sexual education, financial planning and professional image and etiquette.
The Life Skills programme is compulsory to all the learners attending any of the other skills programmes. |
